An Ode to the Average (but improving) Golfer

Hello golfers, welcome to On Golf, a place where average golfers feel seen, heard, and understood.

I, Luke Mangan, will share with you my thoughts on golf.

This is not for pros - I’m really here for the people shooting in the 80s and 90s, but if you’re a little better or a little worse, you’re more than welcome.

1. Why On Golf, and why now?

Over the past year or so, I’ve fallen in love with two things.

  • Writing

  • Golf

I’ve had this pervasive thought week after week of “I just want to share my thoughts on golf.

I want to write in such a way that captures golf’s beauty, golf’s humbling nature, and the true average golfer’s experience.

What’s relatable about golf is not the wins, not the consistency, not the 3rd straight birdie. No, it’s showing up to the first tee at 6:30 in the morning knowing good and well you rarely break 90, feeling like you have an 85 in you, and shooting a 94 anyway.

It’s punch out shots you’re proud of and just getting out of the bunker (even if it’s your second attempt… or third, no judgement).

But it’s also improving. It’s getting to the point in your game where you’d be comfortable on a golf trip with work. Not because you’ll impress them, but because you can hang.

2. Community

I want this to be a timeless publication - one that golfers of all ages can read for pure enjoyment and for the affirmation that they’re not alone in their painstaking pursuit of improvement.

I want my readers to be a part of a community that respects the game, acknowledges both its difficulty and its reward, and ultimately has a lot of fun swinging the sticks.

3. What can you expect?

The bulk of what you’ll see are stream-of-consciousness essays with a poetic bent, detailing the thought processes, the emotions, and the experience of an average golfer.

The joy of a flushed iron, the pain of a flubbed chip.

I may walk you through a single hole one day in depth, a 3-hole stretch that shifted my perspective on the game, my thoughts over my morning coffee just before a round, the thrill of a 12 foot bogey save.

Every once in a while, I may highlight a brand or a golf organization that I’m really enjoying, but for the most part, I will be telling the story of the average golfer.

Eventually, paid subscribers may get access to deals through golf partners, but we’re not there… yet!

4. Share this with your friends

Please, share this with your golf buddies, your go-tos when you need a 4th. I want this to be a place that people say, “if you enjoy golf, you’ve got to check out On Golf by Luke Mangan.”This is for golf enjoyers, and of course for me to write about one of the things I care deeply about — this silly little game.
