There were 42 guys with better odds to win the Scottish Open than Chris Gotterup.
That did not deter the twenty-five year old.
Chris Gotterup claimed a huge PGA Tour win on Sunday at the Scottish Open — only the sixth American to get it done at this event.
The young golfer had just enough poise to hold off a deep leaderboard. He’s hovered around position 10-25 each of his last few tournaments, but had his breakthrough moment on a global stage.
After a 61 on Friday, you knew he had it in him. But a casual even par on Saturday had us wondering if he could keep pace with those surging.
Spoiler, he could. A brilliant -4 performance on Sunday secured his SECOND Tour win of his career (not many remember the 2024 Myrtle Beach Classic (understandable).
Gotterup secured $1,500,000 for the win. See what the rest of the field earned here.
Gotterup is on the horse, and he’s riding into The Open because of this win.
Other Storylines
Rory McIlroy quietly put together his best tournament since the Masters. Finishing tied for second place, it seemed Rory was back in form. Maybe it was the links, maybe it was the crowd behind him — regardless, it was a good week.
More trust in the swing. More commitment in the wind. A needed step in the right direction with The Open just around the corner.
Then there’s Scottie Scheffler. We’re big fans of Scottie over here, and a new side of him is emerging. Raw, unfiltered (more than we’ve come to expect).
He really didn’t have his best stuff this week. No fireworks. No headlines. STILL, he earns another top 10—his 10th in a row. He’s just always there. His standard has just elevated in a way we haven’t seen for anyone in a long time.
A few other notes:
Ludvig Åberg looked unshaken again. T8 and very much in form heading into the year’s final major.
And Bob MacIntyre didn’t quite replicate last year’s magic, but the Scottish crowds still showed up for him.
A calm before the chaos. The Open’s next. This is European golf lore. It just feels right.
Cheers.
